Thai Nguyen family calls for help

A man and two mentally-affected children in Thai Nguyen Province are in need of financial help to build a new house.

Vi Thi Thuan, deputy head of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Dinh Hoa District said the storm in May damaged many houses in the area including the house of Duong Van Cuong.

Cuong's roof was damaged and can no longer protect them from rains. The wooden walls are also deteriorating. There is nothing valuable but an old bed. Cuong and his wife divorced four years ago. The children live with him and Cuong's former wife only visits and provides clothes to the children on occasion.

Nguyen Thi Nam, Cuong's grandmother, said that Cuong was not a quick person. "He depends on the small field and odd jobs to earn money. But even when he worked for other people, he still needed personal guidance or else he might ruin the work. That's why they did not pay him much. Now no one wants to hire him anymore," she said.

Cuong's oldest daughter, Duong Thi Khanh Linh, is 14 years old and has a mental disability. She only sits in a corner and smiles. Cuong's second child, 11-year-old Duong Anh Tuan, is also stunted like Cuong. Cuong's family mostly live on Linh's monthly income for disabled people of VND540,000 (USD23).

Le Van Vinh, head of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Dinh Hoa District, said, "Cuong's family is one of the most difficult cases in our area so we try to help him whenever possible. I often collect clothes and items for Cuong's family. We also give priority to Cuong's family when there are charity programmes but it's not enough. I hope they will get more help to build a new house."
