Tet: Have a blast, but no bang

Hanoi authorities are determined not to have firecrackers as a part of this year’s Tet celebrations.

Hanoi authorities are determined not to have firecrackers as a part of this year’s Tet celebrations.

The city’s Chairman Nguyen The Thao on January 27 requested local authorities to take further measures this year to prevent any illegal production, storage, trading or use of firecrackers and sky lanterns this Tet season.

In cases of violations of the codes, chairmen of districts, wards and communes will be disciplined, Thao emphasised.

Earlier, the prime minister said chairpersons of provincial and municipal people’s committees would bear the responsibility if they allowed the use of banned firecrackers in their localities.

In the past, firecrackers have been a very popular part of Tet celebrations, but their use has caused injuries and even, in some cases, deaths.
