Mai Son Boarding Primary and Secondary School in Tuong Duong District’s Mai Son Commune across its various sites has 286 students. The school sites are all located around 10 kilometres from the commune centre. Most of the students are from Thai, Kho Mu and Mong ethnic groups.
The students often have to travel more than an hour to school. Around 80 students from some villages which are quite far from the school, including Pieng Cooc, Pha Khao, Cha Lo, Na Kha and Na Hang have to use the day-boarding services.

The school has had to upgrade a store into a day-boarding room. Due to financial difficulties, the school mobilised children’s parents to use bamboo to make beds for the room.
The school also lacks five classrooms and equipment for day-boarding rooms.
Kha Van Lap, head of Tuong Duong District’s Board of Education and Training, said five local schools have launched day-boarding services for their students. However, they are all facing financial difficulties building new facilities as well as a teacher shortage.
Mai Son Boarding Primary and Secondary Boarding School is among the most difficult as the 63-square metre dormitory accommodates up to 80 students.
The school uses old blankets for students.
