In order to facilitate construction of the Ban Ve Hydropower Plant, in Thanh Chuong District, residents in Thanh Ngoc and Thanh Son Communes had to move to a resettlement area. But the area did not have a source of clean drinking water.

Now they\'ve been forced to devise their own solution to the problem by designing and making their own water system.

Thanh Son Commune has 16 highlands villages which are home to about 4,700 people. A system of about 100 water basins was set up, as planned, to serve the commune. However they are all nearly dry.

Lo Thi Phuong, from Ngoc Lam Commune’s Nong hamlet, who has lived in the resettlement area for over five years said there has never been a clean water source in the area.

Vi Trong Thuy, Chairman of Thanh Son People’s Committee said to date only three highlands village in the commune have been provided with clean water. The rest of the people have to use water from local streams and are extremely vulnerable to shortages.
