Bui Thi Dan receives the donation.

Bui Thi Dan's son-in-law died four years ago of cancer. At that time, Dan's daughter was still pregnant with the second child. Then one month ago, Dan's daughter also died because of cancer. Since then, she has to take care of two grandchildren alone. The youngest is only four years old and the eldest is six years old.

Dan said the hardest days were when her daughter died, the children cried almost every night while she struggled to support the family.

Many people have come to visit and give them gifts after reading the story.

"I have never thought that we would have so much money. I think I can die in peace," she said.

Dinh Xuan Huong, party secretary of Nhu Thanh District, said that they also called for donations from kind people and were able to raise VND70m (USD3,000) for Dan's family. They are completing procedures so that Dan's grandchildren will be given the benefits for orphan children.

Nguyen Van Binh, vice chairman of Mau Lam Commune People's Committee, said, "Many people have donated over VND200m (USD8,600) to Dan's family. Over VND100m was deposited to raise the children and the rest will be used to repair the house and buy furniture for Dan and her grandchildren."

On September 16, representatives of Dantri and local authorities visited Dan's house and transferred a total of VND246,332,443 to her. This money will also be deposited to raise the children.
