Rabid dog bites 12 people in Dong Nai Province

An unvaccinated 7kg dog showing aggressive behaviour bit 12 residents in Dong Nai Province from June 8-10.

On June 17, authorities in Dong Nai City rolled out rabies control measures and prevented the risk of further spread after a rabid dog bit 12 residents in Ho Nai Ward.

According to a report by the Ho Nai Ward People's Committee, from June 8 to 10, a dog owned by a local family, weighing about 7 kilogrammes and not vaccinated against rabies, showed signs of agitation, aggression, excessive drooling and roaming before biting 12 local residents.

After attacking the residents, the dog was chained up by its owner. It died on June 11. Test results confirmed that the animal was positive for the rabies virus.

Immediately after the bites, authorities instructed the 12 victims on wound treatment, health monitoring and arranged for them to receive anti-rabies serum and rabies vaccination. The victims are continuing to be monitored and are completing the full vaccination course in line with regulations. The rabid dog was destroyed in accordance with the rules.

Through epidemiological tracing, authorities identified four dogs that had been in close contact with the infected animal and urged residents to have them destroyed to eliminate the risk of transmission.

The Ho Nai Ward People's Committee has cordoned off the outbreak area and ordered households keeping dogs and cats to strictly restrain or confine their animals, monitor their health for 21 days and promptly notify the authorities if any abnormal signs are detected.
