255 hazardous rail crossings eliminated in first half

A total of 255 hazardous unofficial railway crossings were removed in the first half of 2026, bringing the total eliminated over the past six years to 1,840.

The crossings were closed under a government programme to improve railway safety and eliminate unauthorised crossings.

More than 2,180 unofficial crossings remain nationwide and require removal to improve safety.

Local governments have installed barriers, closed crossings, erected warning signs, narrowed access points and deployed personnel to monitor high-risk locations. They have also completed road-rail signal integration at 57 level crossings.

Since the programme began six years ago, authorities have removed 1,840 of the country's 4,022 hazardous unofficial crossings, or 45.7 per cent.

However, nearly 13,000 encroachments on railway land remain, while the network still has three accident black spots and 683 high-risk locations.

The Vietnam Railway Authority urged to allocate funding for service roads and supporting infrastructure to eliminate the remaining hazardous crossings and speed up the removal of encroachments along railway corridors.
