Hanoi deploys LED traffic alert screens across city

Hanoi will begin operating 36 electronic traffic information screens on July 15, providing motorists with real-time updates on congestion, accidents, traffic diversions and alternative routes.

The variable message sign (VMS) screens have been installed at major intersections and key gateways across the capital as part of the city's second-phase smart traffic management project.

Police said the system would help drivers make informed route choices, easing congestion and improving traffic management.

The project also includes 2,460 AI-powered cameras, comprising 1,107 for traffic enforcement, 960 for traffic flow monitoring, 112 for intersection surveillance, 251 pan-tilt-zoom security cameras and 30 speed enforcement cameras.

Authorities have also installed 100 smart traffic signal control cabinets, 930 camera poles, 475 km of fibre-optic cable and 136 km of power cable, covering 238 key intersections and major roads.

The upgraded system integrates artificial intelligence to predict congestion, coordinate traffic signals using "green wave" technology and issue real-time traffic alerts through the VMS network.

Police said the AI cameras would also support public security by detecting incidents such as fights, unauthorised entry into restricted areas, fires, smoke and illegal dumping.
