Hanoi to install more than 20,000 AI cameras across inner city

Hanoi is rolling out more than 20,000 AI-powered cameras across nearly 1,000 inner-city streets to improve public security and traffic management.

The Hanoi People's Committee said the city is implementing two major AI camera projects led by the municipal police.

The first project includes 2,460 cameras, AI-powered traffic signal controls and upgraded software to monitor traffic, detect violations and optimise signals at 238 intersections. It is due to become operational in the third quarter of 2026.

The second project will deploy 21,671 AI cameras, together with data storage, network infrastructure and software applications, to support public security and address five key urban challenges identified by the city.

According to the city, around 20,155 AI cameras will be installed along 993 major streets in the inner city as part of the programme.

The project was approved under an emergency order issued in April, and municipal police are working with relevant agencies to complete procedures before construction begins.

City authorities said the AI camera network would also support flood monitoring through its integration with digital surveillance and smart city platforms.
