Truong Thi Giang, 41, and her husband, Bui Van Dai, 40, and their three children live in a deteriorating house Village 7, Tho Cuong Commune, Trieu Son District in the northern central province of Thanh Hoa.
Dai used to be a construction worker before he was seriously injured in a traffic accident in 2010."The doctors then told us that he needed a skull reshaping surgery but we could not afford it," the wife remembered. "We decided to leave the hospital and waited until we gathered enough money for his surgery later."
Giang said that her husband could not do hard work after the accident and she became the breadwinner of the family.
"We have three daughters but the oldest has heart disease, the second has mental problems," she said. "Since he had the accident, I've had to borrow VND100 million (USD4,348) to buy medicine for him and the children. My monthly salary of VND5 million (USD217) paid by a local footwear company means we can only afford simple daily food for the family."

The woman said that she has been doing some extra farming work to save money for her husband's surgery. However, his condition suddenly worsened early this year.
"He suddenly felt lots of pain again and I borrowed some money to take him to the hospital where doctors said that he faced gangrene in his injured area," she said. "They said he needed to stay at the hospital for long treatment. But I had to bring him home after running out of money."
The poor wife said that she now could only cry when seeing her husband dying in pain.
"I've sold out everything worth money at the house to have money for his treatment," she said. " I had nowhere to borrow more money. I hope that we can receive some support from kind donors to pay for his surgery."
Chairman of Tho Cuong Commune People's Committee, Le Trung said that Giang's family has been very difficult since her husband's accident.
"The local authorities have also visited and provided some support to the family but they need more financial support from the community to cover the long and costly treatment for the husband," the official said.
