Poor Quang Binh siblings need support

Two siblings in Quang Binh Province are in need of support after their father died and their mother developed mental problems.

Le Thi Hong Uoc, 18, and her brother Le Tien Dat, 12, are in need of support after their father died and their mother developed mental problems.

Le Thi Hong Uoc, 18, and her brother Le Tien Dat, 12, are living with their mother in Nghia Bac Ward, Dong Hoi City after their father died from cancer five years ago.

However, their mother, Dang Thi Phuong, 48, also developed mental health problems shortly after the death of their father.

Her condition has worsened over the past two years.

My mother used to be a loving woman but she started to show abnormal behaviour five years ago," Uoc said. "She now often talks and screams all day. I love her but I don't know how to help her."

Besides school time, Uoc and her brother try to do odd jobs to earn their living. Uoc said that she would finish high school this year and wanted to study economics at Danang Economics University.

"But university is only a dream for me now," she said. " I need to find a job now to support my mother and brother."

Chairman of the Nghia Bac Ward's Women Union said that Uoc's family is the most difficult case in the area.

"We often visit the family to encourage the two children and find a way to help the mother," she said. "We've proposed to local authorities to send the mother to a local social protection centre for better care. And we hope that the children will receive more support from the community to continue their studies. We know that they are doing very well at school."
