The twins were born prematurely
Do Thanh Ha, 33, in Vinh Bao District still cannot believe how the tragedy could impact his family so fast.
"We were expecting happy days coming with the arrival of our babies but it then turned into a tragedy," the father said. "It just happened when my wife was infected with Covid-19 during the last months of pregnancy. And she died while giving birth to twins in the 29th week last December."
Ha said that he and his wife had been married for six years and tried various ways before taking artificial insemination to have their babies.
"But then my wife could not see our babies before she died," he cried. "The twins were born prematurely, weighing only 850g and 900g and so very weak."
With efforts from doctors, the babies were discharged from the hospital after three months. But Ha had to pay VND 280 million (USD 12,173) in hospital fees.
He had to stop his job as a worker to take care of his children. His elderly parents and mother-in-law were also weak and could not help much. The father had to join a group of breastfed mothers to ask for donated breast milk for his children.
"Fortunately my son and daughter are growing well," he said. "They now weigh 3.8 kilos each. I'm feeding them eight meals a day, six with breast milk and two with formula milk."
Speaking with Dantri/Dtinews, chairman of the Cao Minh Communal Women's Association, Mai Thi Hai, said that Ha and his wife had both been workers with modest income. Their families were also facing financial difficulties.
"Local authorities have come to visit Ha and his children and given them some financial support," the official said. "But they really need more support to overcome this challenging time."
