"The Department of Science and Technology and Phuoc Binh National Park will work with the gaurs' managers to work out a plan to sustainably develop a herd for scientific purposes," he said.
11 guars were allocated to the Lam Dong Centre for Application of Science & Technology to carry out research on the cross-bred gaurs to determine the potential of gene preservation and growth. However, they have been abandoned in a 200-square-metre cage and many are on the verge of starving to death.
Nguyen Cong Van, director of Phuoc Binh National Park, said that the number of the gaurs rose too quickly while the managing unit only rented 1-ha of land to raise them. There was not enough food and nutrition for them. The equipment to store food and water are all rusty, badly affecting the gaurs' health.
Phuoc Binh National Park is completing documents to receiving the gaurs.
"We have paid in advance to take care of the guars and sent two employees to work with the managers to provide better food. We'll save them at all cost," Van said.
In the long-term, the guars will be relocated to Phuoc Binh National Park's 5-ha pasture as soon as early 2021. For the time being, they have hired employees to take care of the gaurs and nurture them.
