VND84.75 trillion (USD3.44 billion) has been proposed for building a metro route linking Thu Thiem Urban Area in HCM City and Long Thanh District in Dong Nai Province.
Under the recommendation made by consulting consortium TEDI–TEDIS, the metro line will be 48.2 kilometres long with the majority going through Dong Nai.
The route crossing Dong Nai River will have a designed speed of 120 kilometres per hour. Around 30 kilometrs of the project will be elevated, while the remainder will run underground. There will be 20 stations on the line, including 16 elevated stations and 4 underground ones.
Of the total investment, roughly VND5.51 trillion will be used for site clearance.
If approved, the is expected to be carried out between late 2026 and 2029 and put into use in 2030.
At present, the Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway is the only route linking Long Thanh International Airport and HCM City, but it has become overloaded. Meanwhile, other road projects like Ben Luc-Long Thanh and Bien Hoa-Vung Tau are still underway. Therefore, according to consulting consortium TEDI–TEDIS, it is necessary to construct the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh metro line.
The Thiem-Long Thanh metro project has also been included in the planning for the railway network during the 2021-2030 period with a vision until 2050.
