The People’s Committee of Dak Lak and the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment on June 1 held a ceremony for the recognition.

The tree, at Yang Lanh Village, Krong Na Commune, Buon Don District, is 29m tall and has a 2.7-metre diameter. Its shade covers 30 square metres.

Village patriarchs said the tree was brought to the locality from Pakse, Champasak Province, in Laos.

At the ceremony, Y-Bham Enuoi, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said the heritage recognition for the Bodhi tree brought honour to the village and the province.

The tree was, in March 2014, recognised as the oldest tree in the central highlands region by the Asian Record Organisation (ARO) and the Vietnam Book of Records.

In April 2015, the VACNE recognised nine trees at Phan Van Toan’s garden in Gia Cam ward, Phu Tho’s Viet Tri City as Vietnam Heritage Trees.

The trees were three pines believed to be 500-to-600 years old, four star fruit trees aged 200-400 years old, a 300-year-old giant crape-myrtle tree and a 200-year-old mall-leaved plane tree.

The Vietnam Heritage Trees programme has recognised more than 970 trees of 70 different species across the nation as heritage trees.

There are two-thousand-year-old vatica trees at Thien Co Temple in Phu Tho’s Viet Tri City and a "Do quyen canh tho" - Rhododendron basilicum - near the peak of the 3,143m Fansipan Mountain at Hoang Lien National Park, found only in Vietnam.
