The development of buildings with classical western designs seems to have eclipsed local architectural forms, one official has said.

Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Dinh Toan has requested Hanoi and other cities and provinces nationwide not approve construction projects that have European styles.
"Many localities have yet to build a regulation to manage urban planning and architecture. They're rather unprofessional in urban designing as well. This has resulted in several inadequacies in the quality of our urban environment," he noted.
In order to improve the situation, he requested provincial and municipal governments nationwide to direct local forces to inspect building design quality with due attention paid to state-funded projects.
"Building designs must uphold traditional values so as to ensure each urban area carries its own architecture that is suitable with environment and local traditional customs," he emphasised.
He required that departments of construction and departments of culture, sports and tourism across the country conducted inspections over local traditional architecture values. The inspection results would be used as a basis for state agency's supervision as well as for design consultancy for new buildings in their places in the time to come.
