Construction of the north–south high-speed railway project will be started before December 31, 2026.
According to the resolution, the project will span over 1,540 kilometres, with a design speed of 350 kilometres per hour and an axle load capacity of 22.5 tonnes. The railway line will feature 23 passenger stations and five freight stations.
The Ministry of Construction will serve as the lead agency, co-ordinating with other ministries and localities to develop and implement a plan to meet the required schedule.
Approved by the National Assembly in November 2024, the project has a total investment of over USD67 billion. It is expected to be completed by 2035, with funding drawn from the state budget allocated across several medium-term public investment plans over the next 12 years.
As per the approved investment policy, the National Assembly has granted the project 19 special mechanisms and policies. The railway will be newly built as a double-track, standard-gauge (1,435mm), electrified line with a design speed of 350 km/h.
Stretching from Ngoc Hoi Station in Hanoi to Thu Thiem Station in Ho Chi Minh City, the high-speed railway will traverse 20 provinces and municipalities, marking a major step in Vietnam’s long-term transportation infrastructure development.
