The newly-opened Nhat Tan-Cau Giay section of Ring Road 2, which is hoped to ease traffic congestion in Hanoi has experienced constant chaos after being opened to traffic.
The section was opened on January 17. However, instead of regulating the traffic, this section has to face severe congestion during rush hours. Motorbikes and even cars drive on pavements as the road remains packed with vehicles.
With no visible police presence and people ignoring signs to use one-way roads, drivers often turn at banned locations or in the middle of the road. In addition, there are several on-going constructions along this section that are encroaching on the road and causing even more congestion.
The 43.6 kilometre long Ring Road 2 will connect major locations in Hanoi including Minh Khai, Truong Chinh and Hanel-Vinh Tuy Industrial Zone. The 6.1-kilometre long road from Nhat Tan Ward to Cau Giay District was started back in 2012 and cost USD304 million.
