An additional 15,779 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Sunday and Hanoi continued to record the highest number with over 2,800 cases, according to the Ministry of Health.
According to the ministry's report, 15,751 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 60 out of 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,811), Hai Phong (836), Khanh Hoa (790), Binh Phuoc (679), and Binh Dinh (636). There were 28 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed a decrease of 762 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 10,217 infections found in the community.
As of Sunday evening, 1,893,570 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (507,810), Binh Duong (291,446), Dong Nai (98,745), Tay Ninh (82,197), and Hanoi (67,776). Vietnam has so far confirmed 30 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 1,899,575. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 9, an additional 12,210 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,500,248.
On Sunday evening, a further 202 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 34,319. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including HCM City (19), An Giang (21), Long An (15), Dong Thap (14), Vinh Long (14), and Kien Giang (13).
Vietnam on January 8 administered 865,962 doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 160.03 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 70.90 million people having received two doses.
