Nguyen Thi Sam had a premature birth. All three of her children are only 14 months old and treated at Bac Giang Rehabilitation Hospital. The legs of the children curved inwards and they can hardly make any clear sound."My children were transferred to Bac Giang Rehabilitation Hospital in early 2020. The doctors said their condition had got better and they will be healthier with long-term treatment. But my family has run out of money. We’re exhausted," Sam said.
According to the woman, after knowing that she is infertile, Sam and her husband borrowed VND100m and turned to in vitro fertilisation to have children of their own.
Unfortunately, she gave birth at the 26th week of pregnancy. The children were incubated for three months and were very weak. She brought them to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi and was told that all children suffer from cerebral palsy and limb paralysis. Two of them have anemia and inguinal hernia.
The children's treatment was partly covered by health insurance but Sam struggles to pay for transportation fee, rent and daily meals in Hanoi. Sam's father-in-law has a mental illness and often goes to the Bac Giang Mental Hospital for treatment. Sam had to bring the children home and transferred them to Bac Giang Rehabilitation Hospital.
Dr Than Sy Nam said, "After receiving the treatment, the children have been able to turn their bodies but they can't make clear sounds yet. These are positive signs and I hope they will be able to live a normal life like other children."
