Bui Manh Nhi, Director of the Ministry of Education and Training’s Personnel Organisation Department, said that, with the seniority allowances, teachers’ incomes would be increased by an average of VND465,000 (USD22.3) per person per month.

The allowances would be applied to teachers who have been teaching at state schools for at least five years.

According to Nhi, the policy is expected to help over 1 million teachers nationwide, who teach more than 22 million students at all levels across the country.

These allowances, according to him, would help offset the rapidly increasing price of living, as well as lay a foundation for pensions on when they retire.

The other aim of this policy is to attract more teachers to the profession.

Private schools would also have to improve their payment system, he said.

In addition to seniority allowances, teachers would also be provided with extras for lecturing, depending on the level of education.

Teachers who work in \'underprivileged\' areas would also be give extra compensation.

Those who have taught at underprivileged localities for at least 10 years will benefit from an additional allowance each year, equivalent to half of their monthly salary.

Teachers who give lectures in ethnic minority languages would be provided with an additional allowance of 50% of their minimum wage.
