As of now, about 179 firms in Can Tho City have announced their highest bonus rates for New Year and Tet Holiday. The highest bonus is VND466m (USD20,500), about VND82m higher than the 2017 Tet bonus.
82 firms will give employees VND2.8m (USD123) to VND11.6m New Year bonuses, doubled 2017 bonuses. The average Tet bonuses are from VND2.9m to VND8.4m, an increase of 15% than 2017 Tet bonuses.
In November, the Labour and Wage Department asked departments of labour, invalids and social affairs and trade unions to review contracts in order to ensure that the employees know about their entitled bonuses. The departments of labour, invalids and social affairs were also asked to work with industrial and economic zones to check on the wages and bonuses plan and report to the Labour and Wage Department.
Former Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Pham Minh Huan said some of the reported huge bonuses were not just Tet bonuses, but they were bonuses from a year of good revenue performance, usually for the managers.
"In general, Tet bonuses for workers are on average worth one month's salary and depend on that year's performance," he said.
