Military stops renting out land at Tan Son Nhat Airport

The military won't be allowed to rent out land at HCM City's Tan Son Nhat Airport for businesses anymore as the land-use planning undergoes revision.

During a meeting about the usage and management of military land, Deputy Defence Minister Tran Don said 489 hectares of land were under the military's management, 107 hectares were managed by the airport and over 464 hectares were shared.

"However, the planning hasn’t been done yet and it is mixed with various other units which makes management difficult," he said.

The idle military land has been used for business since 1975. The management work has become better and fences have been raised to prevent encroachment or disputes. Don said the ministry also specifically ordered all agencies to follow the laws about land management and usage.

"Military units are not allowed to sign new leasing contracts or joint adventures at the airport as the land-use planning is being revised. This is the Central Party Committee of the military forces' resolution," Don said.

Fuel stations on the land must be moved out within one month. Approved projects of land-use for economic activities will still be carried out as long as they are in accordance with the laws. Businesses who only rented a small plot of land and proved to be profitable and not cause trouble for the management work can continue their operations.
