Whale spotted near Hon Mun in Nha Trang Bay

A whale has been spotted near the protected Hon Mun area in Nha Trang Bay, authorities in Khanh Hoa Province said, calling it a positive sign for the local marine ecosystem.

Following the sighting, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board issued recommendations aimed at protecting the rare marine animal and minimising disturbances from tourism and waterway traffic.

Authorities urged boats and visitors to keep a minimum distance of 100 metres from the whale and avoid chasing, surrounding or separating mother whales from calves.

Tourist boats were also advised to reduce speed, minimise noise and switch off engines when stopping to observe the animal.

The use of low-flying drones near the whale was discouraged due to concerns over noise affecting the animal’s navigation and communication.

According to the management board, whales rely on low-frequency sound waves to orient themselves and communicate, making them vulnerable to noise pollution from engines, drones and loudspeakers.

Authorities also called for greater public awareness of marine wildlife protection and urged people to report sightings of whales or other rare marine animals for conservation monitoring.
