An earthquake measuring four on on the Richter scale occurred in the northern province of Son La early this morning, August 20.
The Institute of Geophysics said that a quake was detected at 6:50am, with an epicenter around 10 kilometres from Muong La District.

Information about the aftermath has yet been made available.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said that there have been a total of nine recorded earthquakes in Son La Province since the beginning of this year.
On July 19, three consecutive earthquakes measuring over three on the Richter scale hit Muong La District. The first earthquake, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale,could be felt in Hanoi.
Most of the incidents centered along the Muong La- Bac Yen fault line, which has been very active and may cause quakes at any time.
Hai requested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment cooperate to study the possible connection between climate change and earthquakes.
