The Ha Long Bay Management Board and the Hon Gai Border Guard Station recently patrolled the Hon Reu area of Ha Long Bay and discovered two boats fishing in a prohibited zone.
After being spotted, the boats owned by residents from Quang Yen District, Quang Ninh, sped away and appeared to destroy evidence.
The two fishing vessels violated regulations by having crew members not listed in the crew register and failing to re-register as required for boats under 15 metres in length in line with regulations.
The Border Guard forces brought the vessels to shore and finalised the paperwork to fine the boat owners.
On December 21-22, authorities detected three fishing boats illegally operating in the core area of Ha Long Bay, using destructive fishing methods.
Since 2017, Quang Ninh has banned fishing in the zone and taken stringent measures against destructive fishing gear and techniques. Millions of juvenile fish have been released into the bay to support the restoration of marine resources.
