Local authorities said on October 7 that large quantities of purple clam shells had again washed ashore along the commune's coastline.

Specialist officials and Yen Hoa Commune police visited the site to assess the situation. Preliminary checks found a large amount of purple clams along the beach, most of them dead and without flesh inside their shells.
Residents said marine life, seaweed, vegetation and rubbish are often washed ashore after periods of heavy rain and strong winds. However, this is the first year they have seen purple clams appear in such large numbers and across such a wide area.
Yen Hoa authorities are working with the Fisheries Sub-Department and the Department of Agriculture and Environment to determine the cause.

The incident marks the second time this year that large quantities of purple clams have washed ashore along Yen Hoa beach.
In early September, tonnes of dead purple clams washed ashore, forming strips stretching for about 6.5km along the beach. Authorities collected seawater samples for testing at the time but found no abnormal signs.
