Landslide disrupts road in Lao Cai

A landslide happened in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai early this morning, September 26, blocking traffic on a local road.

A landslide happened in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai early this morning, September 26, blocking traffic on a local road.

The landslide has caused around 60,000 cubic metres of stone and soil to fall onto Road 162 which links Bao Thang and Van Ban districts.

To travel from Bao Thang district to Van Ban districts, vehicles should follow the route Bao Thang - Tang Loong town - Provincial Road 151 (Phu Nhuan) - Vo Lao - Son Thuy - National Highway 279 - Van Ban.

According to a representative from the Van Ban District People’s Committee, local authorities arranged a rescue force and equipment to clear the road following the incident. 

Lao Cai is among the localities hardest hit by Typhoon Yagi. Torrential rain and flash floods have damaged many roads. The total length of the damaged and landslide-affected areas is about 10 kilometres.

By late September 24, Typhoon Yagi brought about a total loss of VND6.64 trillion (USD276.7 million) for Lao Cai.

Bao Yen District was affected the most with VND1.7 trillion, followed by Bat Xat District withVND1.26 trillion, Bac Ha District with VND881.5 billion and Sapa Town withVND600 billion.

The storm and its aftermath killed 131 people in Lao Cai, including 70 in Bao Yen, 28 in Bac Ha and 15 in Bat Xat. Meanwhile, 50 people have been injured and 20 others have remained unaccounted for.
