Lam Dong culls more than 9,500 pigs infected with African swine fever

Authorities in Lam Dong Province have culled more than 9,500 pigs following an outbreak of African swine fever at a large-scale farming complex.

The Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment said 9,556 pigs weighing a combined 356 tonnes were culled between May 4 and May 8 at the Dateh 02 SF facility in Da Teh 3 Commune, operated by DH VINA AGRI’s Binh Duong branch.

The cull included breeding boars, sows, piglets and weaned pigs after the disease re-emerged earlier this month.

The outbreak was considered at high risk of rapid transmission due to the site’s large scale, dense livestock population and interconnected housing system.

According to local authorities, the facility had previously gone 19 days without new infections after more than 1,000 pigs were culled in April, before the disease resurfaced on May 3 among a herd of more than 9,700 pigs.

Possible sources of infection included the transport of breeding pigs from Gia Lai, contaminated stream water or wild birds entering the site.

Because the farm lacked sufficient space for on-site disposal, infected pigs were buried at a designated site about 2 kilometres away from residential areas.

Lam Dong has stepped up monitoring, transport inspections and disinfection measures in affected and high-risk areas to prevent further spread of the disease, while urging farmers to follow strict biosecurity procedures and avoid transporting, slaughtering or concealing infected animals.

African swine fever outbreaks have also been recorded at six household farms across Lam Dong since the start of 2026, with more than 2,200 pigs culled excluding the Dateh 02 SF facility.
