When her children grow up, Tran Thi Hoa decided to withdraw from a poverty programme and was given support to start a business.

However, two months ago, her husband suddenly had a high fever and coughed blood. He was admitted to hospital but asked to return home as they ran out of money. During this time, their eldest son had a traffic accident and their second son was given 13 months of imprisonment after committing a crime.

"Seeing that I had to run everywhere to borrow money, my husband cried and said he wanted to go home," Hoa said. "I also had high blood pressure and vestibular disorders. But I have to be strong or else my family will fall apart."

Their eldest son had a traumatic brain injury and a broken leg. He does not have health insurance so even after borrowing VND20m (USD880), it was not enough to pay hospital charge. Eventually, the family also asked to let him return home.

Ngo Thi Bich Thang, head of the Red Cross Organisation in Phu Tho Commune, said, "Their youngest son is still in sixth grade and their third child already dropped out of school two years ago. I hope the community will help them overcome the hardship and treat her husband and son."
