Du's wife, Le Thi Tuoi, has angiomyolipoma which is abenign renal neoplasm composed of fat, vascular, and smooth muscle in both kidneys. She had an operation during Tet and doctors said she still needed to be monitored. However, due to lack of money and Covid-19, she still hasn't returned to the hospital for a check-up.
Du and his wife built a house from coconut leaves and thrown-away corrugated iron sheets. The house couldn't protect them from rain for floods and even collapsed during a rainstorm. They then built a shack from leaves and thrown-away pieces of wood near their parents' house. The new house is less than 30 square metres and has space for only one bed.
Du is a bricklayer and Tuoi is a worker at a footwear company for little income. However, after felling sick, Tuoi couldn't go to work and stayed in the hospital for most of the time.
Their oldest daughter, 15-year-old Nguyen Thi Hong Ngoc, was born healthily but fell ill at 22 months old. She often had seizures and banged her head on the school walls. Sometimes, she would hit out at her parents while being in a seizure. She can't take care of herself and has to depend on other people for everything.
Their second child also suffers from seizures and often vomits after meals. He was later diagnosed with a brain tumour.
"Whenever I receive a phone call from home, my heart rate would become faster from the fear that something had happened to my family. I always return home quickly in case I have to take them to the hospital," Du said.
Dong Van Tong, head of Dong Phu A Hamlet, said Du's family was one of their poorest cases.
"We tried to find help for them and put up their dossiers for housing support. We really hope that they will get help," he said.
