Nguyen Van Thanh has colon cancer
"My wife just went out to buy medicines," he said. "The pain is especially crushing today."
Tran Thi Cuong, Thanh's wife, said they met in 2007 and quickly got married afterwards. Thanh doesn't know who his father is and his mother abandoned him at three years old. He lived with his old grandfather. When he got married, his uncle let them live in a small house.

"When I was told that he had colon cancer, I felt like I couldn't breathe and I started seeing black. Other people had to bring me to the hospital too," Cuong said.
After going through emergency surgery, Thanh quickly returned to work to support the family and repay the debts.

Do Van Long, vice head of Nam Trai Village, said, "Thanh's family has been one of our poor cases for years. I was told that their daughter needs long-term and expensive treatment while Thanh hasn't been able to repay hundreds of millions of VND. The local authorities and the school have called for help for them but it was not enough."
