The standing deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Phan Van Mai, has just been appointed chairman of the municipal people's committee.
The appointment was announced at the meeting of the HCM City 10th People’s Council held today, August 24.
The new chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee will replace Nguyen Thanh Phong, who has been assigned as deputy head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission.
Phong, a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, had served as deputy secretary of the city party committee from March 2015. He was voted as people's committee chairman for 2016-2021 in October 2015. He was recently re-elected as chairman for the 2021-2026 term.
Phong was also head of the HCM City Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control which is now the biggest epicentre in the country.

Phong now no longer belongs to the executive board and standing board of the HCM City Party Committee, nor holds the posts of deputy secretary of the committee for the 2020-2025 tenure and chairman of the municipal government for the 2021-2026 term.
Speaking at the meeting, the new chairman Phan Van Mai introduced three key tasks that he would focus on in the coming time.
The first one is to carry out drastic measures to control the Covid-19 pandemic and restore normal life to local people. Secondly, he would build a post-pandemic economic development plan which aims to realise the targets set earlier by the city. And thirdly, he would study measures to best utilise all resources, especially human resources for social development.
