Authorities in HCM City are trying to find the source of the odour that is affecting several districts in the city's southern area.

Authorities are trying to find the source of the odour
Nguyen Thi Thanh My, deputy head of Department of Natural Resources and Environment said on August 30 that they had received many complaints from the people living in District 7, Nha Be and Binh Chanh districts. Local people think that the smell comes from Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Complex. The Phu My Hung Development Corporation, investor in several urban complexes, also filed complaints with the city authorities about the foul smell.

Vietnam Waste Solutions Company, investor of Da Phuoc complex, said they had worked with the locals to find the source of the smell. According to the locals, usually at midnight or at 5-6am, the smell of pig manure and dead fish appeared for 10 to 15 minutes, would disappear and then return again.
"We have asked city's authorities to review and find the source of the odour to clear the air and our reputation," a representative said.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has asked the Vietnam Waste Solutions Company to reduce the complex's working hours and try to deal with waste faster. Some solutions suggested including storing waste in low-lying areas to prevent the wind from carrying the smell to other places.
Saigon Green Biotechnology Company and Hoa Binh Environmental Sanitation Company were also asked to review their processes, control the smell from sludge with deodorant and cover the sewage sludge storing areas.
"We have asked agencies to address the smell, carry out inspections and report back by September 6," My said.
The department has expanded the search area.
