A “nail trap” is a scheme where would-be thieves scatter sharp objects along the road to cause flat tires, and then charge exorbitant rates to fix them.

District police departments have been asked to cooperate with local authorities to detect and deal with scams of this kind.

Chairmen of district People’s Committees will be held responsible for any lax management that leads to accidents or loss of human life as a result of such traps.

Localities which often witness such activity have been asked to gather information in a timely manner from citizens in order to prevent any accidents and deal with violators.

“Nail trap” hot spots

National Highway 1A and Hanoi Highway in Ho Chi Minh City have been trouble spots for nail crimes.

The area around Go Dua Intersection and Song Than Overpass in Thu Duc District on National Highway 1A is one of the worst.

According to the newspaper Tuoi Tre, over 40 “shops”, which fix tires, have sprung up along the National Highway 1A connecting Dai Nam (a tourist attraction) to My Phuoc, in Binh Duong Province near Ho Chi Minh City.

Over half of these are operating without a license. Since the Tet holiday, small motorbike repair shops in this area have sprung up all around.

Hundreds of motorbike repair shops are located on the road section of Hanoi Highway, running through District 2, 9 and Thu Duc. They will often charge VND75,000-80,000 (USD3.62-USD3.8) for the repairs (which they often cause themselves). The normal rates for a punctured tire might be around VND10,000-15,000 (USD0.48-USD0.72).
