Hanoi’s famous green rice cake producer halted for violations

Nguyen Ninh green rice cake maker in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh District was ordered to suspend operations on Thursday following food safety violations.

The move came after the municipal inter-agency food safety team inspected the facility at 11 Hang Than Street and identified serious food safety violations.

According to a representative from the Hanoi Department of Health, at the time of the inspection, there were five workers and the owner at the facility.

The cake production area was converted from the family’s kitchen, which has significantly deteriorated. The floor was peeling and damp, with exposed drains and accumulated waste.

The inspection team observed clothes hanging in the processing area, and production tools were found to be dirty due to a lack of regular cleaning.

Particularly, the toilet was located right next to the processing area, which was also infested with insects and littered with animal droppings.

The raw materials were improperly stored, with bags of dried green rice-the key ingredient for making green rice cakes-piled up against the damp walls.

Meanwhile, the facility owner failed to provide papers proving the origin of the raw materials, food additives, and product packaging.

The inspection team found that the owner and five employees lacked health checkups and food safety training certificates.

The Ba Dinh District Food Safety Steering Board was assigned to work with the establishment to address the violations and report the results to district authorities by January 10th.

The inspection group took samples of green rice cake and xu xe cake for quality standard testing.

This is part of the food safety inspection campaign before the coming Lunar New Year instructed by the municipal People's Committee.
