Hanoi’s AI traffic cameras log 6,300 violations in first month

Nearly 2,000 AI-powered traffic cameras in Hanoi issued penalty notices for 6,300 violations in their first month, with running red lights accounting for more than two-thirds, police said.

The Hanoi traffic police department said authorities reviewed footage recorded between December 13, 2025 and January 12, 2026 before issuing the notices.

More than 4,200 cases involved running red lights, accounting for 66.36 per cent of the total, while more than 2,000 cases involved failure to wear helmets. Other violations included illegal stopping and parking and not wearing seat belts.

Police said the rollout had improved traffic flows after smart signal controls were introduced at key corridors and junctions. On one-way streets, travel times fell by 31 per cent to nearly 37 per cent, while throughput rose by 1 per cent to almost 19 per cent. On congested two-way roads, journey times dropped by 20 per cent to 25 per cent, with throughput gains of 8 per cent to 15 per cent.

Hanoi police said the AI camera system would continue operating ahead of the 14th national congress of the Communist Party and the Lunar New Year or Tet holiday alongside traditional enforcement measures and public information campaigns.

Authorities added that the system would be expanded beyond traffic safety to automatically penalise urban order violations, including encroachment on roads and pavements, illegal street vending and unlawful advertising.

Depending on the offence and jurisdiction, recorded images will be forwarded to traffic police, public order police or ward-level police for verification and processing.
