Hanoi proposes expressway closure for Gia Binh airport link

Hanoi has proposed temporarily closing part of the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen Expressway for building a road linking the capital with the planned Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh Province.

The proposed closure would affect about 7 kilometres of the expressway, which is set to be widened from four to 10 lanes as part of the project, the Hanoi People’s Committee said in a report to the government.

The planned airport link road will stretch more than 41 kilometres and require investment of about VND 83 trillion (USD 3.16 billion), serving as a key transport corridor between Gia Binh airport and central Hanoi.

Hanoi said the project requires the clearance of about 201 hectares of land, with nearly 84 per cent of the required area already handed over.

The route crosses two railway lines, Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong and Hanoi-Quang Ninh, and is also affected by existing 500kV transmission lines, requiring coordinated relocation and construction works.

Authorities in Hanoi and Bac Ninh have agreed on a plan to relocate the affected power infrastructure, while state utility Vietnam Electricity is finalising technical arrangements and costs.

Hanoi has urged relevant ministries to accelerate approvals for railway-related works at crossing points and the relocation of high-voltage transmission lines to keep the project on schedule.

Vietnam’s National Assembly approved the investment policy for Gia Binh International Airport in December 2025.

The airport, designed to meet 4F international standards, is expected to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030, increasing to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes by 2050.
