Everybody lost contact with Lam since December 25. Four days later, Hanoi Police officially declared Lam missing and started searching for him. At 2 pm, January 3, the police found another house owned by Lam on Hoang Mai Street, Hoang Mai District, which has not been numbered. They broke down the door that was locked from the inside and found Lam's body.

Director of Hanoi Police also arrived to direct the crime scene investigation and the autopsy.

It is reported that Lam left the headquarters of Quoc Oai District People's Committee at 9 pm on December 25. He asked to be absent from a meeting the next day and had not booked the time off. He drove a car to a parking lot at the Ministry of Science and Technology in Cau Giay District then travelled to Hoang Mai District by unknown means of transport.

Since then, his family, friends and coworkers hadn't been able to contact him.

Do Lai Luat, vice chairman of Quoc Oai District People's Committee, said Lam had called his son before going missing and said that he was in trouble.

Luat said that Lam had been the vice chairman of the district for over 10 years and was promoted to the chairman since last July. He was cautious, calm and didn't have any unusual relationships. There was no problem."

Police started house to house searches in the area after tracking Lam's last call to Hoang Mai District.
