In his meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General Sergei Ordzhonikidze, PM Nguyen Tan Dung stated that Vietnam highly values the central role of the UN in settling international issues, particularly combating such global challenges as the financial crisis, climate change, and epidemics.

The Vietnamese Government chief took the occasion to thank Mr. Sergei Ordzhonikidze, who is also the General Secretary of the Conference on Disarmament, for his supports to Vietnam in presiding over the first conference in 2009 when the country acted as a non-permanent of the UN Security Council.

Vietnam will continue to take part in the UN’s activities in the spirit of initiative, constructiveness, responsibility and cooperativeness, stated PM Dung.

The same day, PM Dung paid a visit to the International Labor Organization (ILO) where he met Director-General Juan Somavia.

The Government chief emphasized that Vietnam always places importance on labor and job generation. Vietnam has designed a national goal program under which jobs will be maintained for nearly 50 million laborers, including 8 million new ones and the proportion of trained laborers raised to 40%, added PM Dung.

He asked ILO to continue its technical and financial assistance for Vietnam to realize projects on labor market, amending the Labor Code, securing jobs for the disabled, gender equality, and social policy.

As ASEAN President in 2010, Vietnam will introduce the “Global Jobs Pact” to the ASEAN Labor Ministerial Meeting and the Human Resource Nurturing Conference to be held in Vietnam in May, confirmed PM Dung.

Meeting with International Organization of Migration (IOM) Director-General William Lacy Swing, PM Dung underlined the Government of Vietnam’s interest in migration management for development goals.

He added that Vietnam will do its best to prevent illegal migration and human trafficking while promoting legal migration and boosting international cooperation in this field.

The Vietnamese PM hoped to witness greater assistance from the IOM for Vietnam in improving capability of State management agencies for migration, qualifying Vietnamese migrants, and protecting legitimate rights and interests of migrants, especially the laid-off workers during the global economic crisis.

Also on the day, PM Dung had a discussion with WTO Deputy Director-General Harsha V. Singh and some senior officials on the Doha Round and its impacts on the global trade.
