Following the latest rise applied from February 21, petrol prices have increased to over VND 26,000 (USD 1.13) per litre. Right after that, food at many markets and supermarkets in Hanoi were priced up.
Vegetables have seen the biggest increase to four and five times higher than previously. Fish prices have gone up by VND10,000 a kilo. Pork prices have remained high at between VND 90,000-140,000 a kilo.
According to a representative from MM Mega Market, they have been asked to raise prices of various kinds of foods from their suppliers.
"Rising petrol prices have led to a rise in various services and goods including food," MM Mega Market said. "Because higher petrol prices mean higher transportation and packaging fees."
