Floods ravage central region

Torrential rains have resulted in severe floods in many central localities from Nghe An to Quang Ngai, causing thousands of pupils to stay at home.

Over the past two days, the water level of the Giang, Non and Rao Nan rivers in Quang Binh Province have sharply risen, isolating many areas.

Five villages in Minh Hoa District have been totally submerged, affecting more than 2,000 people.

On Tuesday, both Ho Ho and Huong Son hydropower plant reservoirs in Ha Tinh Province discharged water following heavy rains. To ensure safety, up to 24,609 local pupils were allowed to stay at home today, September 4.

Around 12,800 hectares of rice and 1,000 hectares of grapefruits in Ha Tinh Province have been hit by floods.

Lots of communes in Huong Khe District have been inundated with six being entirely isolated.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 households in the two districts of Huong Hoa and Dakrong in Quang Tri Province have been evacuated out of danger areas. Many local roads are turned into rivers where people can travel by boat on.

According to Le Thi Huong, director of the provincial Department of Education and Training, schools in flooded areas would delay their opening ceremonies of new academic year.
