Flood claims 69 lives, buries hundreds of communes in Vietnam

The second deadly flood in recent weeks has caused 69 fatalities, 44 injuries and left 6 people missing in central Vietnam.

The second deadly flood in recent weeks has caused 69 fatalities, 44 injuries and left 6 people missing in central Vietnam as of late October 21.

According to the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control, by 9pm on October 20, Nghe An had 120 communes that were underwater, including 35 which were isolated. Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces reported 183 submerged with 16 of those isolated.

People facing difficulties to stabilise lives after flood

DTiNews reported yesterday that the dead bodies of 15 out of the 20 passengers missing after flooding swept their bus away had been recovered. However, it was later confirmed that the 15 bodies included 14 passengers, and 1 other victim. This brought the total number of fatalities to 69, while 6 passengers from the bus accident remain missing.

Roads in Ha Tinh Province have been opened back up to traffic however, many railway sections are still inundated.

On October 20, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung visited Ha Tinh Province to encourage the locals as well as instruct activities to support flood victiims.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Brunei is urged to work with Brunei concerned agencies to take 16 Vietnamese fishermen saved by the Brunei Navy on October 19 to the their home.
