Vietnamese northern localities have planned to evacuate around a total of 135,000 as Storm Maon approaches.

Vietnamese northern localities have planned to evacuate around a total of 135,000 as Storm Maon approaches.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, at around 10 am on Thursday, the storm centre was around 350 kilometres from the east of Mong Cai Town in Quang Ninh Province.

Due to the storm impact, northern cities and provinces would have heavy rain with strong winds until the evening of Friday. Low and mountainous areas in the northern region have been warned of flash floods and landslides.

Border guards have asked more than 33,000 ships carrying 110,000 people in total in the Gulf of Tonkin to avoid the areas forecasted to be hit by the storm. They have also issued flare warnings at coastal areas from Quang Ninh to Nghe An.

The storm has been forested to ravage the Mong Cai area in Quang Ninh and then weaken into low tropical pressure.

Quang Ninh has conveyed the information to 398 tourist boats, 98 passenger boats and 6,250 fishing boats. Around 1,500 tourists on local islands were taken ashore this morning to ensure safety. Those who want to stay on islands in Quang Ninh will be supported by tourism firms.

Twelve northern mountainous localities have planned to evacuate 135,000 people in areas which are highly susceptible to natural disasters triggered by stormy weather.
