The incident occurred this morning, May 21, at Thoi An Ward, O Mon District, affecting dozens of houses, including five which completely fell into a nearby river.
Erosion in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho caused five local houses to fall into a river
According to local authorities, the eroded area was around 55 metres long and 10 metres deep. Up to 34 houses were affected. Among those, five entirely fell into the river, 14 others partially collapsed, while the others need to be relocated.
Bui Thi Nga, a local resident, said that hearing the strange sound, she ran outside and saw the house fall.
This was the third time such an incident happened in the locality over the past month.
Dao Anh Dung, vice chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee came to the area to instruct the relocation for needy households.
The affected people have been taken to local schools and pagodas to wait for their houses to be repaired and relocated. Each household will receive VND10-15 million (USD454,545-681,818) in support.
O Mon District has been hit by several such incidents since the beginning of the year, two of them along the banks of the O Mon River, due to high tides.
The latest occurred on May 10 near the Rach Vam Wharf, on a stretch of river bank in Thoi An Ward, tearing 15 metres of road apart and damaging a local house, which was then dismantled for safety reasons.
