Life has continued to hit Huynh Thi Kim Nga, 62, in Phuoc Thanh Commune, Tuy Phuoc District. Her husband died of a stroke in 2012. Just two years later, their only child, Nguyen Hoang Can, was seriously injured in a traffic accident while on the way to work. While he was still in critical condition, their house collapsed in a storm that year.
"Luckily my son was saved after multiple operations," Nga said. "But he is no longer a healthy man. He can't walk and I even have to help him in his daily personal activities."
The poor woman remembered that while she was taking care of her son at the hospital, she also had to collect stones and bricks left by other families to build a new house. Local authorities supported her family with VND30 million to build a new small house.
"I've spent my last savings to pay hospital fees for my son," she said. "I’ve also had to borrow VND 50 million from the bank and VND40 million from neighbours and friends for his treatment. He is still having to take lots of medicine at present and I'm very worried about how long he can continue."
The 30-year-old son said that he was very sad to be a burden for his mother at this age.
The mother said that she is trying to do every work she can to support her son and younger sister.
"I usually work on the farm and sometimes I am hired to mow the grass or harvest rice for others," she said. "I just want to remain in good health as I’m now the breadwinner of my family."
Chairman of Phuoc Thanh Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Dat, said that Nga's family was in a very difficult situation but the local authorities and people in the area were poor and had not been able to help much.
