Localities urged to make assessment and preparation plans in case of severe weather incidents
According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, Vietnam will face a rapidly changing weather situation in the near future. In response, localities have been asked to prepare.
It has been predicted that in 2014, between 10 and 12 large storms will affect the East Sea, with four to five among affecting the mainland. Even mountainous areas in the north, the central northern region and the Central Highlands may face risks of landslide and flash flood.
Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai instructed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to take responsibility for early informing localities of possible danger.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is in charge of preparing flood maps in coastal and other flood-prone regions as well as providing an outline as to how to handle such circumstances.
In 2013, Vietnam experienced 12 large storms, which caused 258 fatalities and nearly 800 injuries. The storms swept away a more than 10,000 homes and businesses, resulting in estimated losses of over VND25 trillion (USD1.19 billion).
