The G60+ campaign is designed following WWF’s message calling on saving power, said the organizing board comprising the Vietnam Green Generation Network, the Live & Learn, and the Center for Environmental Training and Communications.

In “G60+”, “G” is short for “Giờ” (Hour) and “60+” means switching off after 60 minutes for the Earth’s rest.

The number 60 is also significant at this event: more than 60 coordinators will work together, over 60 events will be organized, more than 60 units will join the campaign, the campaign will be conducted in over 60 locations.

To date, 29 provinces and cities in Vietnam have confirmed their participation in WWF’s Earth Hour 2011.

Along with the world, WWF Vietnam will conduct the Vietnam Earth Hour 2011 in central Hue City on the same date.

Singer Van Mai Huong, the runner-up of the Vietnam Idol Contest last year, has been invited to play the role of the ambassador for the event.

We hope that Mai Huong, with her youthfulness and self-motivation, will create a source of inspiration for everybody, especially young people, nationwide, to take part in the event as well as other activities for the sake of the environment,” said Ms. Tran Minh Hien, WWF Vietnam director.

The WWF VN said central Da Nang city is seeking a position as organizer of the Vietnam Earth Hour 2012.

In 2009 and 2010, the Vietnam Earth Hour was held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh respectively.

Meanwhile, WWF Vietnam also said it has opened a forum at www.beyondthehour.org using 11 languages, including Vietnamese, for individuals and organizations to share their opinions and activities towards reducing human impacts on the environment.

The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and has since been organized in many countries around the world to enhance public awareness of the need to save energy and respond to climate change.

In response to Earth Hour 2010, Vietnam has saved 500,000 kWh after switching off lights for one hour on March 27.
