Customs officers have discovered 800,000 lighters bearing the Taiyo brand in a transit shipment suspected of infringing intellectual property rights.

The inspection found that 17 of the 20 declared categories of goods did not match the shipment's declaration. Authorities also found five of 35 categories of undeclared goods showing signs of possible intellectual property infringement.

The goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights included 800,000 pocket lighters bearing the Taiyo brand, 220 pairs of adult sandals carrying the Crocs brand and 50 car door handles bearing the Ford brand.

According to customs authorities, the shipment was transported by road along the Huu Nghi, Lang Son - Cau Treo, Ha Tinh route.

Authorities suspect that those involved may have exploited transit procedures by failing to declare certain goods or providing incorrect descriptions and classifications in order to transport products suspected of infringing intellectual property rights.

Customs authorities also said the shipment showed signs of falsely claiming Vietnamese origin. Verification is continuing to establish the origin and nature of the goods and determine whether any violations have occurred.

The customs authorities are continuing to handle the case in accordance with the law.
