The sites, at Bai Phu and the Phu Quy storm shelter in Trieu Duong Village, will operate at different times of the year. Bai Phu will receive vessels from April to September, while the storm shelter will operate from October to March.
Bai Phu has a 100-metre-wide entrance channel, compared with 70 metres at the Phu Quy storm shelter. Water depths at the landing and berthing areas range from four to 5.2 metres, with both sites able to accommodate vessels of up to 30 metres in length.
A fisheries vessel control team will be stationed at the two sites to monitor vessel movements, landings and transshipments and enforce measures against IUU fishing. Fishing vessels entering or leaving the sites will be subject to inspections.
The Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment will transfer fisheries monitoring operations at Phu Quy Port, along with equipment and access to systems including VNFishbase, VMS, eCDT and e-logbook, to the control team.
Phu Quy is one of Lam Dong's main fishing areas, with more than 1,560 fishing vessels measuring at least six metres in length and around 7,500 people working in the sector.
Located about 100 kilometres from the mainland, Phu Quy does not yet have a designated fishing port for vessels of 15 metres or longer to land their catches, complicating efforts to monitor vessels and fishing output.
The temporary sites are intended to maintain fisheries controls while planned fishing port infrastructure is developed.
